The Background
UC Davis is a top-tier public research university and land-grant institution known for global leadership in agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, sustainability, and environmental research. The UC Davis team reached out to us with a need to convert several PowerPoints to asynchronous online training courses, but they were also new to the Articulate 360 tools.
The Ask
Like many of our customers, they didn’t just want us to do it for them…they wanted to learn alongside us, building their internal e-learning design and development capabilities along the way. Enter the Yukon Learning blended solution program!
The Work
During our partnership with UC Davis, we developed everything their team would need to start developing courses internally. The process started by getting them enrolled in our Articulate certified training, so they could learn the ins and outs of the tools and their capabilities.
While training was in progress, we also started working on design of both Storyline and Rise templates. We’ve found that after training, the hardest part for learners can be staring at a blank white slide and thinking, “Where do I start?” Our custom template design solution allowed them to jump right into development following training. They had everything they needed to actually start building courses (from the Font and Color Themes to various slide layout options for their content). But, that’s not all!
After delivering all the template source files and step-by-step reference guides for each, we provided a bundle of virtual consulting hours. This allowed the team access to our developers as they started building, to ask how-to or design questions along the way.

The Project Team
Many of our customers who opt for a blended solution of a template and training have never used Storyline before. A template is a great way to dive right in, but it helps to know how to swim first, and that's exactly what training provides. In our live open enrollment sessions, we don't just teach the software; we build the foundation that makes Storyline and Rise work for the customer's specific business goals. That way, when they're ready to start using their new template(s), they know exactly what to do.

When I build templates for Yukon team members, I can lay foundations, confident in the knowledge that they don’t need nor want me to do more, lest I hinder their own expression of the course content. With a template built for a customer’s internal use, far more attention must be given to their use case. For example, what elements does the template need to contain to ensure the end result is aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound? From there, I work to develop something that’s easy enough for the customer to manipulate, yet modern and clean in design.

As trainers ourselves, the various flavors we offer in our blended solution is one of our favorite ways to work with customers. We start by teaching them how to use the tools effectively and then further set them up for success once they are ready to develop. In this project, because Articulate Rise is intuitive and quick to learn, I was able to focus on adding UC Davis-branded design elements so their courses would stand out.
